Program Curriculum

This three-day immersive training introduces therapists to practical somatic therapy approaches that can be integrated into trauma-informed clinical work. Participants will explore how the body, nervous system, and emotional experience interact in the healing process.

Throughout the training, participants will explore:

• Foundations of somatic therapy and the role of the body in trauma and healing
• Understanding nervous system states and how they influence emotional and relational patterns
• Recognizing signs of regulation, dysregulation, and activation in clients
• Techniques for supporting grounding, safety, and nervous system regulation in session
• Clinical cues that indicate when the body is ready for deeper trauma processing
• Practical somatic interventions that can be integrated into traditional talk therapy
• Using breath, movement, and body awareness to support emotional processing
• Integrating somatic approaches with other therapeutic modalities, including EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and AEDP
• Ethical considerations and pacing when introducing body-based interventions

Participants will engage in lecture, experiential learning, clinical discussion, and guided practice throughout the training.

Experiential Learning Components

The third day of the program includes extended experiential learning designed to deepen participants’ embodied understanding of the material.

During the morning, participants will engage in nature-based somatic practices. These exercises explore how natural environments can support nervous system regulation, grounding, and therapeutic presence. Participants will learn how to thoughtfully integrate nature into clinical work when appropriate.

During the afternoon portion, participants will engage in art-based therapeutic interventions integrated with somatic awareness. These creative exercises demonstrate how expressive arts can help clients access emotional experiences that may be difficult to reach through language alone. The combination of creative expression and somatic awareness can support deeper emotional processing and integration.

These experiential components allow therapists to engage directly with the practices, strengthening their ability to bring similar approaches into their clinical work.

Who This Training Is For

This training is designed for therapists and mental health professionals who are interested in integrating body-based approaches into their clinical practice.

The program is appropriate for:

• Licensed professional counselors
• Licensed clinical social workers
• Marriage and family therapists
• Psychologists
• Associate clinicians and pre-licensed therapists working under supervision
• Graduate students in mental health programs
• Other helping professionals interested in trauma-informed, body-based approaches

Participants do not need prior somatic therapy training to attend. The program is designed to be accessible while also offering depth and practical tools that experienced clinicians can integrate into their existing practice.

What Participants Will Leave With

By the end of the training, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how the nervous system and body influence emotional and psychological experience.

Participants will leave with:

• A stronger understanding of nervous system regulation and dysregulation
• Practical somatic interventions that can be used immediately in clinical practice
• Greater confidence in working with trauma through a body-informed lens
• Tools for helping clients build awareness of their internal experiences
• Strategies for safely pacing somatic interventions in therapy sessions
• Experiential understanding of body-based regulation practices
• A framework for integrating somatic therapy with existing therapeutic modalities

Participants who complete the full training will receive a Certificate of Completion in Somatic Therapy for Therapists.

Continuing education 22.5 credits will be provided for eligible participants.

Why Somatic Therapy Matters in Trauma Work

Many clients arrive in therapy with experiences that live not only in memory and emotion, but also in the body. Trauma can shape nervous system responses, patterns of regulation and dysregulation, and the ways people experience safety, connection, and internal awareness.

While traditional talk therapy can offer important insight and support, many clinicians recognize that some experiences cannot be fully processed through cognitive understanding alone. Somatic approaches help therapists attend to the body as an important source of information and healing.

By learning to notice shifts in breath, posture, movement, and physical sensation, therapists can help clients develop greater awareness of their internal experience. These small moments of awareness often create new opportunities for regulation, emotional processing, and integration.

Somatic therapy does not replace traditional therapeutic approaches. Instead, it expands the clinician’s ability to work with the client's full experience, thoughts, emotions, relationships, and the body.

This training introduces therapists to practical ways to integrate somatic awareness into clinical work while maintaining a trauma-informed, ethically grounded approach.

What Makes This Training Different

This training is designed not only to teach somatic concepts but to allow therapists to experience the work in an embodied way.

Participants will learn through a combination of clinical instruction, discussion, and experiential exercises that help translate theory into practice. By engaging with the material personally, therapists often gain a deeper understanding of how to introduce these approaches safely and effectively in their work with clients.

The training integrates several perspectives that inform trauma-informed therapy, including somatic therapy, nervous system awareness, Internal Family Systems (IFS), AEDP-informed relational work, and experiential learning practices.

Participants will also engage in experiential components, including nature-based practices and art-based therapeutic interventions, integrated with somatic awareness. These experiences help illustrate how regulation, creativity, and embodied presence can support the therapeutic process.

The goal of the program is to provide therapists with practical tools, thoughtful frameworks, and experiential understanding that can be integrated into their clinical work in ways that feel authentic and sustainable.

Training Schedule

The Somatic Therapy for Therapists Certificate Program is a three-day immersive training that blends clinical instruction, experiential learning, and reflective practice. Each day builds upon the previous one, allowing participants to deepen their understanding of somatic therapy and develop practical skills that can be integrated into their clinical work.

Day One: Foundations of Somatic Therapy

The first day focuses on building a strong foundation for understanding the role of the body and nervous system in trauma and emotional regulation.

Participants will explore how somatic awareness can support therapeutic work and learn to recognize signs of nervous system regulation and dysregulation in clients. The day will introduce key principles of somatic therapy and provide practical interventions that therapists can begin integrating into their work.

Topics will include:

• The role of the body in trauma and healing
• Understanding nervous system states and patterns of regulation
• Recognizing somatic cues in therapy sessions
• Supporting grounding and safety in clinical work
• Introducing body awareness in a trauma-informed way

Participants will also engage in experiential exercises designed to help therapists personally experience somatic regulation practices.

Day Two: Integrating Somatic Work into Clinical Practice

The second day focuses on helping therapists deepen their ability to integrate somatic interventions into therapy sessions.

Participants will learn how to recognize when clients may benefit from somatic approaches and how to introduce body-based interventions in ways that support safety and pacing. The day will also explore how somatic therapy can complement other modalities such as EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and AEDP.

Topics will include:

• Practical somatic interventions for emotional regulation
• Supporting clients in noticing and describing internal experiences
• Working with activation, shutdown, and nervous system shifts
• Integrating somatic work with relational and trauma-informed approaches
• Ethical considerations and pacing in somatic therapy

Experiential exercises and clinical discussion will help participants translate these concepts into real-world therapeutic practice.

Day Three: Experiential Integration

The final day of the training focuses on experiential learning and embodied integration of the material.

During the morning, participants will engage in nature-based somatic practices. These experiences explore how natural environments can support nervous system regulation, grounding, and therapeutic presence. Participants will reflect on how nature-based elements can be thoughtfully incorporated into therapeutic work when appropriate.

During the afternoon, participants will explore art-based therapeutic interventions integrated with somatic awareness. Through guided creative exercises, therapists will experience how art and expressive practices can help clients access emotional material that may be difficult to reach through language alone.

These experiential components provide participants with a deeper embodied understanding of somatic practices and offer practical inspiration for integrating creativity, regulation, and body awareness into therapeutic work.

I am SO grateful that I got to participate in this course. The concepts I learned were extremely relevant and helpful to my practice as a therapist as well as my own personal growth in terms of relating to others. I am actually planning to go through the recordings after this program, so I can continue to absorb and integrate so much incredible information. This could be an entire 2 semester course or even graduate program.

Wonderful training — would do again and again! Amazing discussions and connections within the group! I would encourage anyone to participate in this training. Will be information and knowledge I know I will reflect back on often and implement within my own experiences as well as the people that I hold space for. Thank you Kris!

The electronic and paper copy of all the materials is extremely helpful. There is a lot of information and having the opportunity to go back and review each piece again and again by using these tools is perfect.  It also allows us to use these tools (worksheet/handouts) for professional development and personal growth.  Thank you!!
